That makes a lot of sense to me. Two other questions that have kept me grounded are: 'what are my limits?' and 'what is the legacy of the work/what will be left behind when I exit?'. I don't think I can make alot of sense of those questions by looking at people as needy or deficient. Or seeing them simply as service users. That's why I think PPC hold so much promise. As long as they get clear around collective power, and frame that within a theory of change that speaks to issues of social justice.
I think dependency is an interesting debate. As working with communities is really subject to where they are and how much they need or want.
Where I have worked with communities I've always tried to keep one thing in mind - what is the exit strategy?
Chees Linda, thanks making this a conversation! Your comments are really helpful, and your point around it needed to come from the community seens to be key to ppc. One of the things that ABCD spends a fair bit of time unpacking is the unintended negative effects of funding, help and advice. They seem to be double edged swords, they can either help or create huge dependencies.
Any thoughts on how funding, advice and help generally can avoid creating dependency?
Hi Cormac. I was at the event in Salford and thought it was interesting event but it left me thinking what was new about it?
I think its people who have always powered the change.
In answer to the questions you propose, as a starter
1. To change an area/attitude has to come from within, from people around you. Its no good saying the Government want us to do 'x'. The change has to be the ones people want and need. To quote a few phrases "one size does not fit all", "every area is different" etc etc
2. People powered change is nourished by support and help from others. This could be funding, offers of help, advice. training but it all comes from the same thing, it being led by the people who want the change being able to get the support they want as and when they need it.
3. A drag. Lack of support (see above), feeling like its something you have to do rather than want to do, the feeling that the wheel is being reinvented for publicity, awareness of what to do, feeling like you are on your own working for the change
The event in Salford got me thinking about PPC. Here are some questions I'm thinking about, and would love to discuss:
1. What are the things that only people can do using people power?
2. What nourishes people powered change?
3. What places a drag on people powered change?
