The colonisation of deprived neighbourhoods: A polemical case for ABCD

My thinking about the colonisation of deprived neighbourhoods by Qualified Community Development Workers was born of my experiences at a local authority seminar on recreation in deprived neighbourhoods in which the council’s head of housing and regeneration said, ‘My job is to build houses, houses and more houses for people that need houses. It is not to build recreation facilities for children’. This developed into a discussion on play provision based on children’s needs during which I asked…See More

What brings you to ABCD Europe?
I passionately believe that people can and should be masters of their own destinies; and that the assets required for this kind of mastery are to be found within communities. However, it can appear that some communities are lacking these assets; especially in "disadvantaged" neighbourhoods. This is often because the people do not have access to their social rights and social order is not established in the neighbourhoods. It must therefore, be the responsibility of the authorities/services to establish social order and access to social rights in "disadvantaged" neighbourhoods in order for the principles of ABCD to come to fruition. This is a more positive approach for the authorities/services than simply trying to "care" for people.

David,

Thanks for posting. This is a hugely significant achievement. The icing on the cake of a career dedicated to making policing about building safer communities with citizens, instead of catching the bad guys. Happy New Year, and keep up the great work!

Cormac
